First published as a book in 1905, the novel is an expanded version of the short story “Sara Crewe: Or What Happened at Miss Minchin’s” which was serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine starting in 1887.

This edition is derived from the book published in 1917 with 12 color illustrations by Ethel Franklin Betts.
