Set during the English Civil War, the story follows the Beverley children who are orphaned when their father, Colonel Beverly, is killed during the Battle of Naseby. The children are saved by Jacob Armitage who hides them in his isolated cottage in the New Forest. The children must soon adapt to their new home in the woods.
Originally published in 1847, this edition is derived from the book published in 1888 with original illustrations by Paul Hardy and John Gilbert. -
