A classic work of historical fiction set in the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1642 to 1649. The novel tells the story of Hester Prynne who has conceived a daughter through an affair and is  forced to wear a scarlet ‘A’ as punishment.  The book explores themes such as legalism, guilt, and sin as Prynne struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity.

First published in 1850, this edition is derived from the book published in 1874 with 30 black and white illustrations and numerous page decorations throughout.  As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.
